Poker Strategy: How do you play when on the Small Blind

Posted: under Poker Tips.

Playing from the position of the small blind is a tough round of poker for you. In case you decide to play your hand and do not end up going all in, you will most likely be in bad position for the rest of the round. You need to have the right poker strategy in mind and know what to do prior to the flop.

When the other players fold their cards while you are on the small blind, the next variable to look at is how the big blind will play his hand. In this position, you need to remember that you can raise and not allow the other players to see the flop without having to spend any chips.

Now what will the big blind do? Depending on what kind of player he is, here are the possibilities:

Good and aggressive

These players will be using their position well. The population of this kind of players in the poker arena is also not that big. If in case you raise this player from your position, he will realize what you are trying to do and will call or he can also three-bet using a variety of cards and later on make life difficult for you using the advantage of their position. They can also try to steal the pot and bet something next to nothing. It is a tough choice but you have to bluff big or flop big. The best thing to do is raise when you have good hands and steal occasiionally.

Tight and not aggressive

This is the opponent that you want to go against while on the small blind. You can bully this kind of big blind player any time. You have two approaches: steal with small amounts or raise frequently so he will be forced to adjust to you. The second strategy works well against a big blind player who is tilting. Against this player, raise the good ones and even the bad ones.

Passive-loose

These are very bad players but can somehow make life difficult for you when they overplay their cards. Bluffing is not an effective trick against them. Throw some continuation bets against players who are aggressive and check against passive ones. Look for weaknesses and make him commit mistakes.

Aggressive-loose

The conditions are the same as playing against the passive-loose poker players but you will be seeing more reraises from these players. Use the aggression they have against them. See the flops with them but do not put much chips into it and then just check call after seeing the flop. After all they might have next to nothing.

Setting goals to improve poker skills

Posted: under Poker Tips.
Tags: ,

Whether you are playing poker just for fun or you have aspirations to be a professional poker player, one thing is certain—you are playing to win. Most players play in cash games and from time to time play in poker tournaments. There are also those who play in tournaments all year round. Whatever direction you are taking, you must set certain goals to improve your skills.

Going for higher stakes

You might be playing in a certain level of cash game for some time and you do not know when to move up. The most important factor to consider is how you manage your bank roll. You should never be impatient and have to determine if you are consistently winning in your current level, if you have the discipline to move back in case things don’t turn out well, and if you can recognize when you are outplayed. Are you hearing “yes”? Then maybe you should give the next level a try.

Probably one of the most amazing people ever to be part of the poker scene. Stuey Ungar had no idea about what the money was doing to him, no idea what the drugs were doing to him – no idea what the gambling was doing to him. Stu craved the action, craved the drugs – and did some crazy stuff in his short life.

Here’s a somewhat strange documentary about Stuey “The Kid” Ungar.

The mathematical facet should be used in various situations but it should be remembered that all games cannot be won by incessantly using this concept. Luck plays an important role as well. For example If your are playing online poker and had started with 1500 coins along with 10 opponents and now you are at 2000 chips then the simple calculation is that blinds have increased from $100-$200 and a $25 ante. This is a terrible hand but you would be calling because the small blind would have been battered and has only 500 chips remaining and he would bet it all. That is your mathematical advantage. A harmonious blend of calculations and luck would help you to win the game.

Importance of Positions and Bets when you get a big pair preflop

Posted: under Poker Tips.
Tags: , , ,

A lot of players lose a tall stack of chips even with a big hand like pocket aces or pocket kings because Pocket Kingsthey don’t know how to play their cards properly. When you have pairs of queens, kings, or aces— the big pairs— you need to be conscious about your chips, previous bets, and position in the game.

Previous Bets and Position

You have to know where you are in the battle field. If you are in an early position, it will be a difficult play but it is wise to raise three to four times of the big blind. With this move, you can lure the other players to call or to re-raise your bet.

In mid position, you will have an idea how your hand should be played. Let us say, a player raises 3 times above the big blind, it will be a good choice if you can re-raise his bet about 2 to 2.5 times more. Doing a re-pop will uncover your opponents camouflage and see what he is made of.
